They, of course, have those celebrity mansions in Beverly Hills. There are the awesome beaches, and historic sites in the Bay area. There are great mountain ranges, and plenty of activities for an outdoor enthusiast to enjoy. Some of the best colleges in the country such as Stanford, USC, and UCLA are perched among all of this beauty.
However, California also boasts miserable traffic, heavy pollution in some areas, wild gang violence, and over-populated prison systems. Here is a list of the 10 worst neighborhoods in California. The list looks at crime, poverty, pollution, poor education, and an overall lower quality of life.
Scouring the internet for bad neighborhoods in California, one can’t help but notice that the city of Emeryville seemed to be on nearly every list. Looking into the area some more, it’s not surprising why.
Situated just north of Oakland, one statistic that stands out is that the FBI listed Emeryville as the second most dangerous city in the Bay Area. The Bay Area has its mega wealthy, as well as some of the worst neighborhoods in the country, and Emeryville ranks high on that list.
It is only a small town of 10,000 people, but packs a violent punch, despite being headquarters to both Pixar and Jamba Juice; not exactly scary names in business.
To be fair, Emeryville, in and of itself, may not be terribly bad, nor its residents. However, its proximity to Oakland is certainly something of which to be aware.
Of the 729 people arrested in Emeryville in 2013, 67 percent of them were from Oakland. This crossover contributes to a lot of problems for this community. While the number of homicides tends to be low, the number of violent crimes such as armed robbery, stabbing, beatings and rapes are excessively high.
It may not surprise you that Oakland would be on this list. In fact, the reason it’s listed second is to show its violent impact on surrounding communities such as Emeryville.
Oakland is a city of just less than 500,000 people, and what is mesmerizing is that if you live in a city that big your chances of being a victim of violent crime is one in 50. That’s an overwhelming number for much of the country who live in areas where they may never see a violent crime in their lives, or for generations.
Oakland is currently the most dangerous city in California. However, the intensity differs throughout the city. East Oakland is by far the worst. However, hipsters are moving into other areas of Oakland as a revitalization project hitting the city. The question is, will hipsters and community gardens ever overcome a city more dangerous than Detroit or Chicago?
Stockton has about 300,000 residents. Sadly, it was the second largest city to file for bankruptcy in the United States. That is of course, behind Detroit. While Stockton has had its problems for years now, a city filing for bankruptcy provides a disparaging outlook at the poverty level in that city, as well as the lack of resources now available: poor city infrastructure, poor school
systems and a lack of resources to hold everything together.
All of these factors have given Stockton a bad reputation as well as increased violent crime rates. If you live in the city you have a one in 83 chance of being a victim of violent crime.
In comparison, the rest of the country experiences 32 crimes per square mile per year. California combined experiences 83 crimes per square mile, per year. And Stockton, 277 crimes per square mile per year. While it appeared a short time ago that Stockton was close to lowering gang and gun violence, a recent upsurge in associated crimes is making people wonder.
San Bernardino is more notably known for a recent terrorist attack at a company party leaving numerous people injured, and dead. However, even before the attack, San Bernardino was on this list.
The city is ranked as safer than only four percent of other U.S. cities. That is not a good place to start when it comes to pleading your case about living in a nice, quiet town. However, like most of the cities on the list there are the good areas, which are really good. Then there are the bad areas, which are really bad.
While San Bernardino recently announced revitalization efforts in its more notably dangerous areas, the city still carries with it not just a stigma of crime, but also the reality seen every day.
Ranking scarily high in murder, rape, robbery and other violent crime — San Bernardino has only slightly fewer crimes per square mile at 211, which is over six times as high as the rest of the country, and 2.5 times higher than the rest of California.
In Richmond, California’s crime and gang violence was so bad that the community hired several outsiders to come into the city and try to develop a unique plan to combat violence. At the time, it was the third most violent city in the country.
What they did was find the 50 people in Richmond most likely to kill, or be killed in the course of a year. Those people were approached and essentially given a second chance. For a stipend and the ability to turn their lives around they would act as representatives of the community — providing insight to the authorities, as well as building trust, and strengthening positive bonds throughout Richmond.
While this strategy still has a long way to go, it is showing progress. However, this unique style of battling crime also has its detractors, and also does not change the fact that Richmond is a relatively poor community with a lot of violent gangs. That is a bad mix in an area ill-equipped to combat such problems.
Compton is one of only a couple of cities made famous in the late 80’s and early 90’s through rap artists who perpetuated the poverty and gang violence between east and west coast neighborhoods and gangs.
Thirty years later, Compton is as violent as ever — marking it as one of the most likely places to be murdered in California. With excessive poverty, a heavy social system of gang violence, and not enough police to enforce, or capture criminals — Compton looks as if its future is somewhat bleak.
The scariest thing about Compton’s violence is the number of murderers who are never found. Of all the murders in the Compton zip code, 59 percent of the killers are never found. This means criminals are still out on the streets and likely to be in situations where either they will kill again, or be killed in a violent crime or retaliation.
Commerce is a small community of about 13,000 people in Southern California. While this list is a mix of dangerous communities, Commerce may be one of the best neighborhoods on this list.
Firstly, the amount of violent crime and homicides have dramatically decreased in the last few years. However, you have a one in 13 chance of being a victim of property crime if you live in Commerce — a huge number. So, while greater efforts have been taken to stem violent crime, crime itself is still strong — making for wary travelers moving throughout the city.
When looking at the overall crime picture Commerce ranks as better than only one percent of the cities across the country. This community still has a long way to go.
Modesto has tripled in size in a very short period of time. You would think a boon like this would be good for a city. However, such a large population growth means that the city may have been ill equipped to handle such a population boost. This often results in a lack of available jobs, poverty and crime. Modesto has seen all of these problems and more.
First off, Modesto was ranked high in U.S. cities for most miserable places to live. In California, it is listed by the FBI as one of the top five most dangerous communities to live in. While the leaders in Modesto are trying hard to overcome the stigma, many residents just move on and find a more fitting place to live. The current poverty, crime, and frequent reminders that you could lose a vehicle are probably a good indication to just stay away.
One fact working in Clearlake’s favor is the city has only a handful of murders compared to the other cities on this list. So, with only a couple of murders how is Clearlake on the list? Let’s just say that the extremely high number of other violent crimes supercede the murder rates. Most of these violent crimes are assaults and rapes.
The city is ranked on the FBI’s report as the 10th most violent city in California, which as you can see is a state littered with bad cities. If this was the 10th most dangerous city in Iowa, it may not be such a bad thing, but here in California, this means you are playing with the big dogs; and those dogs bite.
From the 1920’s to the 1950’s, Watts was an area of apartment buildings and boarding houses and considered well-kept and safe. Then, during the1960’s crime started surging and riots escalated. Residents were no strangers to violent crimes.
Looking into Watts further, it appears to have been in decline for a long time, and hopes of bringing back a once thriving and peaceful LA community are optimistically foggy. That is not to say there haven’t been any improvements. The city has dramatically decreased its homicide rate. However, gang violence is still strong resulting in robberies and other violent crimes.
Non-residents may not want to walk around, but perhaps a few years down the road you will see an entirely new city.
